Big Major Cay, also known as Pig Beach, is one of the uninhabited islands located in the Bahamas; it’s an island of unspoiled nature, whose beaches are known around the world for hosting a group of adorable pigs. What seems to be a beautiful fairy tale for children has become reality: these lucky pigs populating the island, in fact, can safely chill in the sun or swim in its clear turquoise waters. Moreover, they really love tourists, who entertain them and feed them with either bread, fruits or natural food. That’s why, as soon as the pigs spot a boat on the horizon, they swim fast towards it, hoping for a few succulent bites.

But how did these animals end up living there? Some say they were left there by a group of sailors who planned to come back and cook them. However, they never did and the pigs managed to survive thanks to excess food dumped by passing boats: for them it was the beginning of a new life in a corner of earthly paradise!

How to get to Pig Beach?

One of the most common ways to get to Big Major Cay is by taking a Caribbean cruise including a stop in the Bahamas. From there, in fact, even if you were not planning on visiting "Pig Beach", you could easily take a boat or a plane to reach this unique destination. On the other hand, if you wanted to plan your holiday from Italy, you would  usually reach Miami first.

Once in Miami, there are several options to get to Big Major Cay:

  • Take a flight to Nassau
  • Take a flight to Georgetown (capital of Exuma)
  • Take the FRS Caribbean Ferry to Bimini
  • Reach Fort Lauderdale and depart from there

Despite the high cost to travel in the Bahamas, Pig Beach still remains one of the most sought-after destinations in the world, thanks mainly to the continuous advertising on the social medias. Indeed, once you visit the island it’s impossible not to take photos or get a “selfie” with the #swimmingpigs.

We guarantee they’re even cuter in person!
